But some are asking for exceptions to keep more non-teaching positions than the district recommended a move Maloy has said is open to principals who consult their staffs and parent-advisory groups. The School District has about 500 to 550 teachers who have annual contracts, Garber said.

Teachers generally don't receive tenure, or continuing contracts, until they've worked as annual contract teachers for three or four years. The School Board on Tuesday voted 5-0 to ratify 1992-93 contracts for three noninstructional employee groups. School Board member Elmer Jenkins commended negotiators for reaching a tentative agreement last week. The agreement broke impasse only days before an arbiter was scheduled to help settle the dispute. The board had voted 3-2 in March not to ratify the three contracts after some community members complained that an anti-discrimination clause in the contracts would protect hom*osexuals.

The clause had contained the word "lifestyle."
