Kabir Bedi Recalls His Son, Siddharth Bedi's Fight With Schizophrenia And Suicide, Shares His Guilt (2025)

It was in the'70s when a tall, dark and handsome man had swooned the hearts of every girl in the country with his macho man personality and sharp looks. We are talking about none other than Kabir Bedi, whose love life has always amused his fans. He had first gotten hitched to Protima, with whom he had an open marriage. Later, he had openly declared his love for Parveen Babi in front of his first wife, Protima. He had then married an American model, Susan Humphreys. Kabir Bedi's thirdwife's name is Parveen Dusanj.

While Kabir Bedi’s love life has an interesting twisted tale, he has faced some major traumas in his life too. One of the major traumas, he had faced in his life was the one, when he had lost his son, Siddharth Bedi to mental illness. Kabir and Protima were blessed with two kids, a daughter,Pooja Bediin 1970 and a son, Siddharth Bedi in 1971. Siddharth had tragically taken his life in 1997 after years of suffering from Schizophrenia. His death had made his mother, Promita suffer from depression and then she had left for a pilgrimage to the Himalayas. In 1998, Protima was pronounced dead in the mishap at Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.

Kabir Bedi’s son, Siddharth Bedi had committed suicide in 1997, when he was just 25 years old after being diagnosed with Schizophrenia and a long battle with it. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kabir opened up about his son’s mental illness and his death. He shared that his son was brilliant and recalled his fight with the unknown ghosts. He said, “Suddenly, one day, he couldn’t think. We tried so hard to first figure out what was wrong, and for three years, we battled these unknown ghosts, and eventually, he had this extremely violent breakout in the streets of Montreal, and it took eight policemen to nail him down. And then, the doctors in Montreal finally diagnosed him as schizophrenic.”

P.S.: Many publications have been circulating the pictures of Kabir Bedi's son, Adam Bedi, and he is getting confused as Siddharth Bedi. However, all the pictures, tagged as Siddharth Bediare of Adam Bedi, son of Kabir Bedi and his second wife,Susan Humphreys, and he is settled in California.

Kabir Bedi also talked about how his family tried their best to win a battle against his son, Siddharth’s illness, but lost it as his son “chose to go”. Sharing that at the end of the battle, he was the one, who lost, Kabir said, “He came to Los Angeles and we tried our best to battle this. In the end, it is a battle that I lost because he chose to go through suicide. He couldn’t bear the world that schizophrenia gave him.”He also talked about his guilt and said, “The guilt one suffers when somebody in your family commits suicide is enormous, no matter how much you try.”

It was in lockdown 2020, when the actor, Kabir Bedi had penned a memoir titled, Stories I Must Tell.In his memoir, he had recalled his open marriage with his first wife, Protima. The actor had shared, "Our open marriage (Kabir and Protima’s) may have seemed like a good idea at first. In the end, it only caused me greater anxiety. It had led to a lack of intimacy between us. I didn’t feel the love that I wanted, the caring and sharing I needed. Nor was I able to give it. The old magic had gone. I was feeling alone, empty and dejected."

In his autobiography, he had alsorecalled the night when he had told his wife, Protima about his brewing love with Parveen Babi and how he had wanted to be with her for the rest of his life. The actor had shared, "There was no easy way to break the news (to Protima). “I’m going over to Parveen’s tonight,” I said softly when she came in. “Parveen’s!” she repeated in surprise. I could see her computing what must have happened. “But I’ve only just arrived. Can’t you stay tonight at least?” I shook my head. No, I have to be with her tonight … and every night.” In that moment, she realised that our relationship had changed forever. She let out a deep breath and looked at me. “Do you love her?” I nodded, not without sadness. “Does she love you?” she asked, her voice a notch higher. “Yes,” I said gruffly, wanting to cry."
