Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (2024)

While tabletop games can be incredibly social and rewarding experiences, being bound to the physical world does have its limitations. Whether it's space constraints or simply not having anyone around you willing to play, there are lots of times people have wished they could play a game and simply been unable to.

That's where Tabletop Simulator comes in. A sandbox that lets you recreate virtually any tabletop game you could think of, the base game is augmented by its extensive modding community, who have worked tirelessly to take some of tabletop's most popular games to a broader audience. But with literally hundreds of mods out there, which ones are worth your time? Here are the top adaptations of board games that you can play through Tabletop Simulator right now.

Updated March 14, 2023 by Joe Parlock: The Tabletop Simulator community continues to knock it out of the park with so many creative, faithful, and technically impressive adaptations of popular games. Whether you're wanting to Slay the Spire with your friends, or just say lots of naughty words with Cards Against Humanity, there's a seemingly endless well of games for TTS to draw from.

25 Slay The Spire

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (1)

The first of many tabletop games inspired by indie darlings on this list, Slay The Spire brings the game's roguelike card game to Tabletop Simulator with this surprisingly faithful adaptation.

Described as a "cooperative deckbuilding adventure", Slay The Spire brings the same permadeath and random encounters of the video game, but lets you and up to three other players all work on slaying the spire together.

Best of all, this mod is official and produced by the board game's publisher Contention Games. It's even ported by designer Gary Dworetsky, meaning you'll be getting the best digital adaptation possible.

24 Pokemon TCG

As one of the biggest trading card games in the world, there are already plenty of ways to play the Pokemon TCG. Unfortunately, both TCG Online and TCG Live have plenty of problems of their own, and don't give you the real tabletop feel that Tabletop Simulator provides.

Developed by RomyKing, the TTS version brings every card up to and including Sword & Shield: Silver Tempest to your table. It includes all the main expansions, theme decks, and even has things like coin flips and tokens to track Energy. Best of all, it can support more than two players, letting you and your friends recreate that local game store experience.

23 Deep Rock Galactic

If you thought Deep Rock Galactic was only a co-op FPS, you'd be very, very wrong. Those deep-space mining dwarves proved so popular that a tabletop adaptation was quickly announced and funded through Kickstarter – making over ten times its original target.

The Deep Rock Galactic tabletop game brought everything you loved about the video game. Co-operative play challenges you and three friends to try and mine as many resources as you can before being overwhelmed by bloodthirsty Glyphids. Upgrade your dwarf's unique abilities and equipment, and work together to explore hex-grid caves and tunnels to find valuable ores.

The Tabletop Simulator adaptation is fully up-to-date with the latest rules, and includes all the models and scripting needed for you and your friends to get started digging up Glyphid nests straight away.

22 Cards Against Humanity

The infamous party game Cards Against Humanity has been brought to Tabletop Simulator will full scripting thanks to the work of modder Scootaloo.

It's incredibly likely you've already played some variation of Cards Against Huamnity. One player has a statement with certain words blanked out, and it's up to the rest of the table to pick their funniest cards.

Of course, Cards Against Humanity is known for its blue humour, with lots of answers being rude, shocking, or even offensive depending on the audience. This mod includes most of the major expansions, including themed packs based on science, fantasy, the '90s, and internet memes.

Cards Against Humanity can be a lot of fun with the right group, but it definitely isn't the kind of game you'll want to suddenly drop in a family gathering.

21 Descent (Second Edition)

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (5)

While Dungeons & Dragons encourage dungeon masters to collaborate with their parties to tell a story, Descent is all-out war. One Overlord develops a devious dungeon, and it's the party's job to clear it by any means necessary.

While the Overlord is busy trying to complete their goals, the party must wade through every trap, dungeon, and enemy they throw at them. Descent has had plenty of expansions over the years, and this Tabletop Simulator mod includes most of them.

Everything from the base game through to the Lost Legends expansion is available here, complete with guidebooks, rules, and enough Hero, Monster, and Lieutenant packs to fill thousands of hours. It's also got over 180 scripts to speed up your setup time, allowing your party to take on the Overlord even quicker.

20 Yu-Gi-Oh! Dungeon Dice Monsters

Remember that weird time in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime where they suddenly ditched duelling and instead starting playing a game with dice? Konami briefly hoped it would become the next big thing, and released a full tabletop game based on it.

This mod by Arukādo brings this long-forgotten piece of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s history to Tabletop Simulator. The goal is simple: each player has a "Monster Lord", and through carefully placing tiles, monsters, and obstacles, they must prevent the opponent from dealing three damage to their lord.

Featuring hundreds of cards from across the anime, manga, tabletop game, and even the poorly-received Game Boy Advance adaptation, this is probably the single best way to play Dungeon Dice Monsters in 2022.

19 Digimon Card Game

Did you think the top trading card game on this list was going to be Pokemon? Or Magic The Gathering? Or even Yu-Gi-Oh!? Well, you'd be surprised to learn that none of them are anywhere close in popularity on Tabletop Simulator to the Digimon Card Game. Part of this is likely because it's a newer game that lacks a digital adaptation, making this the only way to play online without a webcam.

The other reason is that the Digimon Card Game is fantastic, giving you a partner Digimon to build your deck around. Victory is achieved through using various support cards and evolving your Digimon into bigger and more powerful forms, and knocking out your opponent's 'Security Stack'.

This mod by Zaffy is frequently updated to consist of every newly announced and translated card as quickly as possible and even includes the prebuilt decks that Bandai Namco encourages newcomers to use to learn the game.

18 Codenames

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (8)

Codenames sees two teams of players fighting over a grid of 25 codeword cards, which are secretly split between the two teams. The only players who know which cards belong to which team are the 'Spymasters', who have to try and guide their team by giving vague, one-word hints. If a team finds their own codeword, their turn continues. If they accidentally take the opposing team's codeword, the turn ends and the opponent has an advantage.

It's an immensely popular party game full of subterfuge and coded language, and the TTS-Codenames mod by Rob Ford builds on it even further by including user-made decks alongside the official ones included.

17 Villainous

Putting you in the shoes of some of Disney's most famous villains, like Maleficent and Prince John, Villainous is about messing your opponents up as much as it is pursuing your own goal. As is often the case in their movies, each villain can become their own worst enemy, with other players using your own cards against you to slow you down.

The Villainous mod listed on the top of the Steam workshop isn't the recommended version, as it has been discontinued. The updated version includes the base game and its expansions (Wicked to the Core, Evil Comes Prepared, Perfectly Wretched, and Despicable Plots). It also contains the Marvel-focused Villainous: Infinite Power, and its expansion , however, these aren't designed to be compatible with the Disney sets.

16 ROOT

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (10)

An asymmetrical wargame with a bucolic twist, Root puts you in control of various factions of a great war between woodland animals and has you fight for control of the region. For example, the Cat forces of the Maquise de Cat must maintain their grip on the area through careful logistics and policing, while the Alliance plays a much sneakier game of conspiracies before snapping up a victory at the last moment. Meanwhile, the Eyrie simply wants to grab as much land as possible while it can, and the Vagabonds are an unknowable faction with their own, hidden goals.

Dr. HaZaRd's mod includes every expansion as of the game's fifth edition, and even has unique 3D model pieces to give the various animal armies a more detailed look than even the physical game includes.

There is an official adaptation of Root available as well, developed and published by Dire Wolf.

15 The Binding Of Isaac: Four Souls (+ Requiem)

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (11)

Based on the massively successful roguelike The Binding of Isaac, Four Souls is an official card game adaptation that challenges four players to battle with monsters and collect loot in their race to be the first to collect the titular four souls.

It's somewhat similar to Magic The Gathering, with creatures having power and toughness staps, and effects that can be triggered be tapping them, but it's got that cute-but-grim art style that made The Binding of Isaac so popular in the first place. There are also lots of references to other indie games here, too, with cards based on anything from QWOP and Oddworld to Gish and Hollow Knight.

The cool thing about this mod is that it's official. Produced by the designers of Four Souls in collaboration with Isaac's creator, Edmund McMillen, and Four Souls' publisher, Maestro Media, this is a completely legal and sanctioned adaptation of the game.

14 Don't Let It Die

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (12)

Don't Let It Die is unique on this in that it was a mod for Tabletop Simulator before it was released as a physical board game. It's also the second official adaptation on this list, as both were made by lead developer Dustin Hendrickson.

Described as a prehistoric "cooperative survival game", you and up to three other players have two weeks to learn all you can about this newly discovered 'fire' thing. To do so, you have to keep the fire you've found from going out, which means hunting for supplies and protecting it from the elements.

Though technically the Tabletop Simulator version was made for prototyping, it includes both the base game and its Hindrance expansion for free.

13 Eldritch Horror

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (13)

This H.P. Lovecraft-themed co-op game puts you and up to seven allies to the task of exploring the world and figuring out how to stop one of the mythos' many Ancient Ones from destroying everything. As you travel the world, you may encounter various monsters and enemies that can inflict horrific physical and psychological injuries upon you. The clock is against you as well, as some conditions may worsen over time, all while the influence of the Ancient One constantly expands.

12 Clue/Cluedo

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (14)

Cluedo (known as Clue in North America) is an absolute board game classic, and one of the most successful board games of all time. Each player must move around the mansion, finding clues to work out who murdered Mr. Black, where they murdered him, and what they murdered him with before anybody else can.

This mod is based on the 1996 US version of the game, which has some slight differences for international players, such as Reverend Green being the mobster Mr. Green instead. Despite that, this is still an incredibly faithful recreation of the game, with its cards and weapon props all being as they were in this edition.

Of course, Cluedo already has an expansive digital adaptation by Marmalade Game Studio that gives it an updated aesthetic and numerous new boards and characters to pick from.

11 Spirit Island

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (15)

Spirit Island is an asymmetrical, cooperative game with you and your friends becoming powerful spirits. Your goal is to stave off an invading adversary that seeks to colonise your home using your unique abilities. By building up your own powers, you can either completely eradicate the invaders, scare them away, or even destroy the island yourself before they have the chance to do it. The game includes multiple armies to fight against, such as Russia, Scotland, Sweden, France, and England, and 24 Spirits to play as.

10 The Game Of Life

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (16)

Another classic, the Game of Life takes you through your adult life, as you advance your career (or go to college) and make important life choices. The game's goal is to get as much money as possible by the time every player has retired, whether that be in the Millionaire Estates or the much less affluent Countryside Acres.

This adaptation by Afflicted One and Sethenstien is a faithful recreation of the 1996 edition, and even includes the rules booklet as a PDF file. It does require some manual setup, though, meaning new Tabletop Simulator players might struggle to get started.

There are two official adaptations of The Game of Life by Marmalade Game Studio, including The Game of Life and The Game of Life 2, which serves as an expanded part-sequel-part-remake.

9 Azul

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (17)

While some board games have you venturing into dungeons to fight horrific monsters or as a secret agent working to uncover a mystery, others have you adorn the walls of your Portuguese palace with pretty tiles. That's exactly what Azul is – drafting tiles to try and complete patterns and gain higher scores, while also maybe taking resources away from your opponents.

Ramun Flame's Azul mod includes the base game and the collector's set tiles and a series of fan-made tile sets, including Viking and Pokemon-themed. It even has AI support, letting you play the game against a table of computer bots if you'd prefer.

8 Kingdom Death: Monster

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (18)

Set in a grim fantasy world almost completely lacking in natural resources, Kingdom Death: Monster is a co-op survival game that has you and up to three other players build your civilisation from nothing, while also hunting down the monsters that patrol the world. The game also features a large number of story cards, which work as random encounters that mark the progression of your community from scavengers to true wasteland rulers.

Misterslack's mod includes the base game and all of its expansions and the Community Edition 2.02 fan-made expansion.

7 The Red Dragon Inn

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (19)

A comedic parody of roleplaying games, The Red Dragon Inn is set after your party have successfully raided a dungeon or defeated a villain and have returned to the tavern for a night of debauchery and celebration. The goal is to navigate the night while remaining as sober as possible – getting too drunk and rowdy can make you lose the coins you just worked so hard to collect.

The Red Dragon Inn is a long-running series, and this mod by Noy2222 collects all seven parts and their 'Alley' expansions into a single collection. 50 characters, all eight of the Otto decks (which work effectively as AI NPCs for tables with not enough human players), every drink, prize, and event is included here. As Noy2222 puts it, the mod contains "Absolutely everything".

If you enjoy the Red Dragon Inn series, an official DLC for Tabletop Simulator adapts The Red Dragon Inn: Battle for Greyport, a co-op deckbuilding adventure set in the same world.

6 Star Wars Armada

Best Games To Play on Steam's Tabletop Simulator (20)

2015's massively popular wargame set in the Star Wars universe required a ridiculous amount of space to play. But those with a table big enough to play it were rewarded with a deep, tactical experience and a unique inertia-based Mauever system to replicate how ships of various size move through space.

Star Wars Armada – Complete by Valadian brings most of Armada (up to Wave Seven) to the game and some key automation to make playing it a more streamlined experience than in tabletop. It's frequently updated with bug fixes and new units, with the latest update coming over five years after its initial release onto the Steam Workshop.
