Colin Farrell is a proud dad of two sons: James and Henry.
The Irish actor welcomed his oldest son in 2003 with ex-girlfriend Kim Bordenave. Four years later, in 2007, he revealed that James was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome, a rare neurogenetic disorder that can cause “delayed development, problems with speech and balance, mental disability and, sometimes, seizures,” according to the Mayo Clinic.
People who are diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome typically live an average lifespan, and symptoms begin to become noticeable in a child’s first year of life.
In April 2025, Colin shared that he and Bordenave made the decision to move James to a long-term care facility that can assist the pair as they continue to make the best possible medical decisions for their son.

James Padraig Farrell
Colin and Bordenave welcomed their son James in September 2003. While the pair’s relationship didn’t last, their dedication to their son has been unwavering.
In 2007, Colin revealed James was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome, a rare neurogenetic disorder that often includes developmental delays, speech impairment and balance concerns.
“I have never thought of my son as being someone with a disability,” Colin told the Irish Independent at the time. “It goes back to special needs and what is a disability and what isn’t.”
Colin has continued to open up about how the disorder impacts James over the years. “Things like walking and talking and eating and feeding himself, all those things that so many of us naturally take for granted because they come so easily, to James, they come somewhat harder,” he told People in 2013. “Everything he’s achieved in his life has come through the presence and the kind of will that is hard work. He’s a lot to be inspired by.”
In an interview with Candis Magazine published in April 2025, Colin revealed he and Bordenave had made the decision to move James into a long-term care facility. “It’s tricky — some parents will say, ‘I want to take care of my child myself,’ and I respect that.”
“My horror would be, what if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and, God forbid, James’ mother, Kim, has a car crash and she’s taken too — and then James is on his own?” the actor noted. “[He’d be] a ward of the state. And he goes where? We’d have no say in it.”
“We want him to find somewhere where he can have a full and happy life, where he feels connected,” Colin added. “By going out in the van every day and going to the supermarket and doing the shopping together. By going to the beach, museums, movies, all that stuff. Just a connected life.”

Colin’s youngest son Henry was born on October 7, 2009. The actor has been open about parenting Henry, who joined his dad at the Oscars in 2023.
In February 2008, Colin opened up about Henry’s arrival. “He’s such a celebration, the little fella,” he told Irish radio talk show host Ryan Tubridy. “He’s, as far as I’m concerned, exactly the way he should be.”
Last year Colin revealed his two sons are his “harshest critics.” As he told Extra TV in April 2024, the boys are old enough to watch his movies, and he just hopes they’re nice about it. “I mean they’d be sensitive to my feelings, but yeah,” he joked.
